As we mentioned in our previous blog, your body’s disposition towards being healthier peaks during autumn. As the first month of this beautiful orange season, September presents itself as the gateway to picking up all your new year’s resolutions and seeing them through until the end of the year.

Just as the first -ber month heralds your body’s second wind for wellness, and we did say that the best way to do that is by starting a full body cleanse, you wouldn’t be able to get far if you don’t ditch those bad habits that contributed to your being unhealthy thus far.

One of those is spending too much time looking at screens. The movement Scroll Free September aims to challenge everyone – youth and grown-ups alike – to spend as much time as possible away from their social media accounts. While this movement mainly focuses on mental health effects of too much social media use, the act of prolonged screen time has other health effects.

What is Scroll Free September?

The Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH), a British charity, came up with this campaign. It aims to improve personal relationships as well as mental health by encouraging people to step away from social media, which have negative effects on these two things.

There are five ways that you can participate in Scroll Free September. You can quit cold turkey, which means totally abstaining for 30 days. If you want to do it gradually (or actually need to access social media for work), you can pick certain periods in the day to refrain from using social media.

For example, you can commit to not scrolling when socializing like having dinner with family and friends. You can also block out social media during school or works hours.

What happens when one does too much screen time?

Since scrolling has become a compulsion for most people, getting lost in the “explore” tab until the wee hours of the night is fairly common. Some use the excuse that this helps them fall asleep. However, humans are biologically programmed to be more sensitive to light at night. The glow from our screens stimulates our brain, which makes it harder for us to fall asleep.

Other effects of spending too much time looking at a screen besides disrupted sleep are impaired eyesight and mental illness. This could be due to lack of quality sleep, or it could be due to what we actually look at when we look at screens. Social media addiction leads to anxiety, depression, weight gain, adrenal fatigue and body image problems, among others.

To improve your sleep, you can free yourself from scrolling temptation starting at 6pm by leaving your phone somewhere far (maybe in the living room or downstairs if you live somewhere with more than one floor). Make your bedroom a screen-free zone starting a few hours before bedtime will be a lot of help.

How to create a healthier you this fall

Besides significantly decreasing your screen-staring time, you can also work on other aspects of your health this season. We talked about how autumn is actually the best time to commit to fitness. Why not expand the benefits of Scroll Free September by doing the following for your overall wellness?

Take this time to develop healthier habits

Once you’ve set screen time for yourself or your whole family, it will take the rest of the month to completely break the scrolling habit and usher in a new one. During the times when you’d be usually scrolling, why not pick up a book about something you’re interested in? It could be about investing, raising cacti, or even knitting!

You can also take this time to do a quick at-home workout. There are very easy bodyweight exercises that can be done in 15 minutes without special equipment!

Switch out chips for healthier snacks

While autumn is actually potato season, it’s best if you don’t consume them in the form of deep-fried chips. If you want something crispy to munch on, best bake them or use an air fryer to make healthier chips. Vegetables that are in season in fall include pumpkin, squash, and kale. With simple healthy seasonings like Himalayan pink salt, these homemade creations will taste just as yummy as store bought ones.

Enjoy nature with family

Take advantage of the comfortable temperatures to spend more time outdoors! The Japanese actually believes immersing oneself in nature by walking a forest trail makes one healthier. This idea is called shinrin-yoku and it is actually scientifically proven to improve your immune system and mood. So go and have a picnic in the woods!

Jumpstart this healthier lifestyle by going on a full body cleanse

By participating in Scroll Free September, you’re actually cutting out a big chunk of what’s likely causing you stress. The age of social media gave birth to something called FOMO or the “fear of missing out”. This anxiety-causing condition contributes to stress, and stress is literally toxic.
