Whole Foods likes to project an image that their food is clean and sustainable but their actions don’t always line up with their image. Despite being more expensive, Whole Foods sells foods that contain common contaminants like pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals and genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
This fact was brought to light nutritionist, scientist and author, Mike Adams, who also runs the popular website “Natural News.”
“While sold at higher prices, Whole Food’s products are no different from foods sold at other conventional supermarkets. Whole Foods sells the illusion of eating healthy” he says.
According to Adams, Whole Foods has the same suppliers and ingredients found at other supermarkets.
Adams can back up his claims because he has personally tested some of the foods he found at flagship Austin, Texas store of the food retail giant.
He found that some of the foods tested were contaminated with substances (like GMOs, pesticides, herbicides and heavy metals), which are linked to health issues like diabetes, cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and kidney disorders. He hasn’t even begun testing for hormone disrupting chemicals yet.
Two years ago, Adams met with executives at Whole Foods and showed them the results of foods he tested. Some came back positive for heavy metals like cadmium, mercury and lead. Whole Foods took his information and changed nothing.
Adams say Whole Foods is a company he used to believe in but has now gone the way of a typical corporation that is run driven by profits rather than morals. It is a company that runs on pure deception.
Whole Foods knowingly sells GMO foods. In fact, 20 to 30 percent of the packaged foods, salad bar, wheat and dairy sections contain GMOs. Almost all the non-organic Kashi products tested also contained GMOs.
More proof that Whole Foods is not on the consumer’s side is that they’ve partnered with Monsanto to keep the GMO labeling law from being enacted. Both Monsanto, a market leader in GMOs and herbicides and Whole Foods stand to lose out on profits if the GMO labeling law passes.
Adams, a champion of food transparency, feels that GMO labeling would expose Whole Foods as a company that doesn’t stand behind their mission of selling “all natural” food. As would ‘country of origin’ labeling.
Whole Foods buys some of its produce from China, a country with unenforced environmental regulations and labor laws. Understandably, they’d source from China if they couldn’t find the food locally but that’s not the case. The same produce is available in Texas and California. They prefer to buy from China because it’s cheaper.
So what can consumers do? There are many options. You can vote with your dollar by not shopping at Whole Foods. Instead, shop at a farmers market, join a community supported agriculture coop or grow your own food. Cut out the Whole Foods middleman by buying straight from the farmer. Not only do consumers save money this way, but also support local farming.
The reason consumers who buy organic produce at Whole Foods should wash their food with veggie wash is because they may be coming from a super polluted country like China. It is also a great idea to do a cleanse, like the 21 Day Body Makeover, to clean out the residue of the healthy food and produce you bought at Whole Foods. Purchase our 21 Body Makeover Program to clean out your body to be one step to a healthier you.
Health conscious consumers should not only know the truth about companies like Whole Foods but tell their friends and family and spread the message through social media. Consumer pressure alone can turn a company like Whole Foods from the wrong path and back in the direction of their original mission. With some economic pressure, we can help Whole Foods return to its good-intentioned roots, back before they became a publicly traded corporation.
